Abington's 9/11 Memorial Donation Account

by Diane Cardano-Casacio & Her Team

To remember the tragic events of 9/11, the Abington Fire Department plans to construct a memorial at the fire and police training grounds in the Roslyn section of Abington Township.

The Abington Township Board of Commissioners approved the creation of a donation account that will fund and construct the memorial at the Oct. 11 board meeting.

The training grounds, which are located in the 2200 block of Florey Lane, will be home to the memorial that will consist of a flag pole and a pentagon shaped masonry base supporting a 2-foot eye beam from the World Trade Center.

The memorial is estimated to cost $15,000.

Those who want to make a donation to the fund can send a check to the finance department in the township building, indicating it’s for the 9/11 memorial, said Township Manger Michael LeFevre.

The fire department was able to obtain the steel beam from the September 11th Families’ Association, said Abington Fire Marshal Ken Clark, following the meeting.

“We applied for the piece of steel Oct. 6, 2010,” he said. “We were one of the last organizations to get a piece of steel.”

The steel is from one of the World Trade Center towers, but Clark said he is not sure which tower the steel came from.

At the memorial, Clark said they also hope to feature a plaque with the names of Abington residents who were closely connected to the events of 9/11.
