Severe Weather Alert From Springfield Township

by Diane Cardano-Casacio & Her Team

Severe Weather Alert

Residents are advised to make preparations as Hurricane Irene approaches

Thursday, August 25, 2011

As the effects of Hurricane Irene approach the Delaware Valley, Springfield Township residents are reminded to prepare for periods of heavy rain and strong winds beginning Saturday night into Sunday. Please take the following actions to protect you and your family:

FLOODING - Most weather reports are predicting heavy rains and flooding.  If your home or business is located in an area subject to flooding, move all furniture, appliances and posessions to an upper floor.  If you have flood gates or sandbags for doors and windows, consider installing or placing them now.  If your driveway or garage is prone to flooding, or the roadway in front of your home floods, move all vehicles to higher ground.  Make sure all rain gutters and downspouts are clean and in working order.  The fire companies will not pump out basements as there is a potential for structural collapse due to hydrostatic pressure.

WIND - Strong winds may take down tree limbs and utility wires.  Entire trees may come down due to saturated ground.  Extended power outages are possible.  Move all patio furniture and trash containers indoors or secure them so that they do not become airborne.

Residents are advised to have adequate food, ice and bottled water on hand.  Please make sure all flashlights are in operating order and that you have access to an operating telephone and battery-powered radio.  If you are taking prescription medications, please have them filled prior to the weekend.

During the course of the storm do not drive unless it is absolutely necessary.  If you must drive, be on the lookout for debris in the roadway such as trees, limbs and utility lines, and observe a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you.  If you encounter a flooded roadway, DO NOT attempt to drive through it.  TURN AROUND, DON'T DROWN.

If you encounter a Police, Fire or Medical emergency, Dial 911.

Mosquito Pool Tested For West Nile

by Diane Cardano-Casacio & Her Team

Mosquito Pool Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

East Lane neighborhood to be treated

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

The Montgomery County Health Department has notified Springfield Township that a mosquito pool located at the dead end of East Lane in Wyndmoor recently tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The County will be treating the area to minimize the potential for exposure, and will continue to monitor the area until the mosquito breeding season has ended.  Treatment is usually in the form of spraying performed in the evening hours.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), human infection with West Nile Virus can be asymptomic (no symptoms), or can lead to West Nile Fever or West Nile Disease. Approximately 4 out of 5 persons infected with WNV will not develop any type of symptoms or illness.  Additional information about West Nile Virus are available at the CDC website.

Mosquito Prevention Tips:

Mosquitoes can lay up to 250 eggs at a time in still water and will hatch in 7 to 10 days. However, if you and your neighbors take steps to eliminate standing water from around your home, the mosquito population will be reduced dramatically. Consider the following tips to prevent mosquitos from ruining your outdoor activities:

  • Make sure your gutters are clean and running properly; Adjust them as necessary to provide proper drainage.
  • Take a look around your property and store anything that might collect water indoors. These items include wheel barrows, old tires, hubcaps, toys, kiddie pools, pool covers, tarps, plastic sheeting, garden equipment, boats, canoes, and anything else that may retain water.
  • Remove standing water in ponds, ditches, clogged rain gutters, flower pots, plant saucers and puddles.
  • Cover all rain barrels, garbage cans and recycling containers with lids.
  • Clean and rinse birdbaths at least weekly.
  • Check that outdoor lighting and lawn ornaments are not holding water.

For more information about mosquito prevention and the West Nile Virus, please visit the Montgomery County Health Department website.
