Explore Whitemarsh Township

by Diane Cardano-Casacio & Her Team

Whitemarsh Township is a rare community of tree-lined streets, endless farmland and beautiful estates right next to a bustling city. The combination of suburban and rural creates a marvelous balance for the 16,702 residents who live here. Founded in 1683, settlers originally moved in after the discovery of Limestone in the area. Later on, the American Revolutionary War hit the town hard with both the Battle of White Marsh and the Battle of Barren Hill. The site where Washington’s troops hunkered down after a massive defeat is now the famous Fort Washington Park, with fishing, hiking, bird watching, cross-country skiing and picnicking. Bird lovers will adore the organized “Hawk Watch” that tours over 16 different species of raptors. History lovers will also adore the Hope Lodge and Mather’s Mill, protected buildings from the 1700s.

More then just it’s impressive history, Whitemarsh Township is awash with a vibrant contemporary life. It’s home to McNeil Consumer Healthcare, the largest private employer in Montgomery County, and six adored golf courses: Whitemarsh Valley Country Club, Sunnybrook Country club, Green Valley Country club, The Ace Club, and two courses of the Philadelphia Cricket Club. For amazing dining, try McNally’s Tavern and their famous “Schmitter,” known by the press as “the ultimate cheese steak” and “the planet’s greatest sandwich.” For a more international flavor, search out Bluefin restaurant with the best sushi according to residents. The best deserts will be found amid crowds of sugar-lovers at Corropolese Bakery & Deli, a family owned business with mouth-watering treats.

Student-aged residents are a part of the Colonial School district (http://hub.colonialsd.org/ Pages/default.aspx). Some students can attend Germantown Academy, the oldest nonsectarian day school founded in 1759. This K-12 school also shares the oldest continuous football rivalry with the William Penn Charter School. This football game is the perfect display of Whitemarsh pride, community and a foundation rooted in history.
