Damage & Clean Up After Storm- Springfield Township

by Diane Cardano-Casacio & Her Team

September 8, 2011 - Overnight rains have resulted in widespread flooding and damage throughout Springfield Township.  Unofficial measurements indicate that the Township received over 4.5 inches of rain.  Weather forecasters have predicted an additional 2 inches to be received throughout the day.  Damage assessment and clean up activities are currently underway.

Many of the Township's major roadways (Bethlehem Pike, Church Road, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Stenton Avenue) are impassable as a result of floodwaters or heavy traffic.  Other local roadways such as Walnut Avenue and Northwestern Avenue are also closed.  The Springfield Township School District has cancelled all classes for today.

At this time Peco is not reporting any utility outages in Springfield Township.

If your home or business has sustained flood loss, please report it to the township so that we may notify you in the event that disaster assistance is made available by the federal or state government through their respective disaster assistance agencies (FEMA or PEMA).  Currently there is no disaster assistance available for private property loss. Springfield Township will assist residents with filing the appropriate documents if assistance is made available.  Announcements in this regard will be made through the news media, the
Montgomery County website and Township website.   Visit the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) website for information about flood preparation and recovery.

Refuse and recycling will be collected on their normal schedule.  If you have sustained damage as a result of the storm, and have excess trash that you need removed, please place it at the curb for collection regardless of your collection day.  Storm debris such as tree branches and other brush must be cut and tied together in bundles not to exceed three (3') feet in length and 25 pounds in weight.  Please contact a tree surgeon or landscaper to remove large limbs and logs as they will not be collected.

Tip About Insurance Claims After Hurricane Irene

by Diane Cardano-Casacio & Her Team

Just a quick tip for fellow Pennsylvanians...be sure to check your homeowner's policy to see if there is a special "Hurrican Clause". If so, your deductible for claims resulting from a hurricane could change drastically. For example, if you have a $1000 deductible on homeowner's insurance claims, some policies read that if you are claiming damage due to a hurricane, your deductible will then be 2% or 2.5% of the insured value (the sales price). So, on a $250,000 home, the deductible would go from $1000 to $6250!
