An average four-person household can use 400 gallons of water a day. About 25 percent of that water is used in the bathroom. Here are some simple tips to help you conserve water. And conserving water helps save money.

  1. Check your faucets and pipes for leaks. A small drip from a faucet can waste about 20 gallons of water a day.
  2. Install a toilet tank bank in bathroom toilets. This will reduce the amount of water used per flush.
  3. Do not discharge your sump pump into the sanitary sewer system.
  4. Take shorter showers. A four-minute shower can use up to 40 gallons of water.
  5. Turn the water off after you wet your toothbrush.
  6. Minimize the use of kitchen sink garbage disposals.
  7. Only use your dishwasher and laundry machine for full loads.
  8. Check your toilet for leaks.
  9. Install water-saving shower heads.
  10. Put low-flow aerators on your faucets
